Layne Riggs Places UNC Charlotte Into Victory Lane At Charlotte Motor Speedway
by Hunter Thomas May 24, 2026 0 commentsCONCORD, NC – Layne Riggs beat the clock to win the caution-filled North Carolina Education Lottery 200 and place UNC Charlotte into Victory Lane at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series was scheduled to race on Friday night; however, Mother Nature had other plans as the track was drenched for days. The race finally got underway at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, and the stars of the series put on a incredible show for the fans as they raced towards the cutoff at 12 p.m.
Riggs was the leader at the time of the final caution, and he cross the finish line to earn his seventh series victory and second of the 2026 season. During post-race, Riggs bowed to the fans to honor Kyle Busch who passed away on Thursday.
I hope he’d be proud of the performance,” Riggs said about Busch. “Just our hearts are really heavy this weekend. I’ve just been struggling with it a little bit and just trying to have my game face on and right, but these guys know how to put a smile on my face. Great job to everybody at Front Row Motorsports. Thank you so much to my teammate Chandler Smith. We had a little teammate restart there, and he stuck with me and pushed me. I’m super proud of him and the strong performance we had today.”
Riggs didn’t just fall into the victory. In fact, he won Stage 2 and led a race high of 52 laps, including the final seven. Being the hometown driver, he also took UNC Charlotte, which is located just over four miles of the track to Victory Lane.
“Had UNC Charlotte of the truck, right down the road,” Riggs said. “Go Niners! Put Niners in Victory Lane, I’m so proud of that with the gold numbers, so thank you to everybody at UNC Charlotte. Man, what a win.”
Kaden Honeycutt finished runner-up. After the race, he was a little disappointed because he believed he had a good shot at outrunning Riggs, but despite coming up short, Honeycutt reflected on how today was just another race and that life and family are what’s most important.
“Definitely could be worse,” Honeycutt said. “I definitely wanted to be the guy that gave Kyle (Busch) the bow there, because he definitely deserved it. If I had won, I was planning on giving Brexton (Busch) the flag, because he probably would have laid another butt whopping on us if he was here. Just a bad week for all of us; a tough weekend for the whole community. Hug your loved ones, appreciate them, tell your mom and dad that you love them even if you don’t have a great relationship with them. Life means more than racing for sure. Second is good, still have a points lead and we will fight in Nashville next week.”
Connor Zilisch, Ben Rhodes and Gio Ruggiero rounded out the top-five. Completing the top-10 was Christian Eckes, Brandon Jones, Tanner Gray, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and William Sawalich.
There were 18 lead changes among nine drivers.
The race featured 11 cautions, which is a record for the series at Charlotte.
The wildest accident of the day took place on Lap 48, when Corey Day, who was driving Kyle Busch’s No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet went airborne after contact with Gio Ruggiero on the backstretch.
