DARLINGTON, S.C. – Darlington Raceway hosted Track Laps for Charity benefiting Blessings in a Backpack on Saturday afternoon.

Proceeds raised through participants paying to drive their personal cars around the track, Too Tough To Tame on Saturday, will benefit the Boys & Girls Club in Hartsville, S.C. Non-profit organization, Blessings in a Backpack will provide meals for youth who may not have a sufficient amount of food. (LEARN MORE)

“The Track Laps event benefits Blessings in a Backpack, which is an organization that provides meals for youth,” said Darlington Raceway President Kerry Tharp. “On Fridays, they pack a meal for them because some of these kids don’t have any food when they go home. That is going to benefit the Boys & Girls Club up in Hartsville, so we’re going to do that. We’ve done these events. This is the third one this year. We’ve got one more. We usually get about 180 cars out here, so people like coming out here and driving around the track.”

An estimated more than 100 show cars filled the NASCAR Cup Series garage area. Participants came from as far away as at least Michigan to showcase their unique rides. The oldest car on display was a Ford that was originally built in 1922. While classic cars populated the garage area, there were plenty of modern, customized sportscars as well.

“This was an idea that came about several months ago,” Tharp said. “It’s kind of a lead in to our race weekend – two weeks out. We thought having a classic car show and then tying it in to our Tracks Laps for Charity event would be a good way to get people out to the track. I was pretty impressed with the number of cars that we have out here today. I’m not sure, but I’d say that we have close to maybe inside of 200 (cars). There’s a good many cars out there, and there are people from all over.”

Up next on the schedule for Darlington Raceway is the Cook Out Southern 500 weekend, September 4-5, when the track will host the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on Sunday and the NASCAR Xfinity Series on Saturday.
