It’s Official: NASCAR To Resume 2020 Season At Darlington Raceway In May

DARLINGTON, S.C. – NASCAR will return to action at Darlington Raceway in May by hosting three national series races.

NASCAR’s season was brought to a halt prior to the fifth race weekend of the regular season at Atlanta Motor Speedway in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A stay-at-home order in North Carolina forced teams to not only sit on the sideline but not report to race shops as well. Now after two months of quarantine, the NASCAR Cup Series will return to the Lady in Black.

The NASCAR Cup Series races at Darlington Raceway on Sunday, May 17 and Wednesday, May 20 will not replace the 71st running of the Southern 500 that is scheduled to be held on Labor Day weekend. Instead, these spring dates will serve as NASCAR’s step in the direction of potentially running a full 36-race season.

“As our nation restarts, I can think of no better place for NASCAR to drop the green flag than at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina,” said South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster. “Team South Carolina stands ready to help NASCAR restart the season at Darlington Raceway with three races next month that can be enjoyed by fans from home on television, radio, and online.”

The race on May 17 (3:30 p.m. on FOX) will be a familiar 400 miles just like the track’s old spring date, and the May 20 (7:30 p.m. on FS1) race will be 500 kilometers. However, even though cars will be on the track, fans won’t be in the grandstands. COVID-19 is still prevalent, so NASCAR will operate the spring Darlington races with as little personnel as possible.

Darlington Raceway will also host a 200-mile NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Tuesday, May 19 (8 p.m. on FS1).

“It’s an honor for Darlington Raceway to resume the 2020 NASCAR season in just a few short weeks with three races in four days,” Darlington Raceway President Kerry Tharp said. “Darlington is one of the most iconic and historic tracks in the sport and will be a tremendous backdrop when NASCAR returns to racing. We certainly appreciate the support from our state’s leadership in working with NASCAR to allow us to host these events.

“In accordance with the CDC and public health agency standards and protocols, no fans will be admitted to these events; however, we encourage all fans to tune in to FOX, FS1, FOX Deportes, MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.”

Charlotte Motor Speedway will host the next four NASCAR national series races. Below are the announced dates:

Sunday, May 24 | NASCAR Cup Series | Coca-Cola 600 | 6 p.m. on FOX

Monday, May 25 | NASCAR Xfinity Series | 300 miles | 7:30 p.m. on FS1

Tuesday, May 26 | NASCAR Gander & RV Outdoors Truck Series | 200 miles | 8 p.m. on FS1

Wednesday, May 27 | NASCAR Cup Series | 500 kilometres | 8 p.m. on FS1

All events will be one day shows and there will be no practice sessions. The only race that will feature qualifying will be the Coca-Cola 600.
