Shane Van Gisbergen Earns Eighth NASCAR Cup Road Course Win At Sonoma Raceway
by Hunter Thomas June 28, 2026 0 commentsSONOMA, Calif. – Shane van Gisbergen held off a hard charging Chase Briscoe to remain undefeated at Sonoma Raceway in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Gisbergen has now reached eight road course wins in his career in the fewest starts of any driver to compete in NASCAR’s top series. It’s a feat that not even NASCAR Hall of Famers Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart completed, and now Gisbergen is just one road course win away from tying Gordon for the most all-time.
“I think you just get better with time,” van Gisbergen said. “It’s like me on the ovals. The more you do it, the better you’re going to get.
“Yeah, this week aside, I feel like our car is getting better and better. Watkins Glen, my car was unreal this year. I think last week, too, we had an amazing car once the track rubbered in. Yeah, hopefully we just keep improving as well, and we try and stay at the level we’re at.”
In the closing laps of Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350, van Gisbergen was out front with a comfortable lead; however, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Briscoe chased him down and challenged for the win on the last lap. Briscoe’s big move came in the final corner when he dove deep, but he wasn’t able to get to the back of the Trackhouse Racing No. 97 Red Bull Chevrolet, and van Gisbergen held on for his second victory of the 2026 season.
“Yeah, we had these sh– boxes come out in front and they were wobbling all over the track and putting dust and I just kept struggling,” van Gisbergen said. “Chase was just really, really good. Yeah, a couple more laps we would have had some problems.”
With the win, van Gisbergen now jumps three positions in the standings and makes his way into the top-16, which is the cutoff for The Chase. He now sits 14th just ahead of Ryan Preece and Austin Cindric.
“It certainly helps, but I need to really step it up on the ovals,” van Gisbergen said. “We all do. Yeah, certainly helps us, but this is an oval championship, and I need to keep getting better at them.”
Despite finishing second in the No. 19 Columbia Bank Toyota, Briscoe was frustrated at the end of the day because he believed that he had the faster car. The runner-up marked his first top-three since Nashville back in May.
“Not very many people get that close to him at the end of one of these road course races,” Briscoe said. “Yeah, just frustrated with myself. I felt like I definitely had the better car. I didn’t do as good of a job as he did driving. I just made a mistake with, like, three or four to go getting into one. I was having to push so hard, and that was where I would make up my ground. It was just such a razor’s edge, and I about crashed. Gave up a call to second, and then I was able to obviously run him back down at the end. If I don’t make that mistake, I’m probably ahead of him I feel like at the end.”
Polesitter Ty Gibbs who led 31 laps throughout the day and swept the first two stages finished a very strong third. Roudning out the top-five was Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell who ran his first full race since fracturing his wrist Michigan.
Completing the top-10 was Ryan Blaney who battled cooling suit issues, Connor Zilisch, Ryan Preece, Michael McDowell and Alex Bowman.
There were eight lead changes among six drivers. Van Gisbergen led a race high of 74 laps.
The caution only flew once for an accident, and it occurred on Lap 3, when Josh Berry spun in Turn 2 after contact with Cindric.
Denn Hamlin now leads the standings by a mere two points after Tyler Reddick finished last. Reddick’s car suffered mechanical issues, and he was never able to get back onto the lead lap to make up positions.
The NASCAR Cup Series will return to Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday, July 5 for the first time since 2019. The eero 400 will broadcast live on TNT at 6 p.m. ET.
