DARLINGTON, S.C. – Ty Gibbs battled hard for his first top-10 finish of the season on Sunday in the Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway.

Gibbs started in the ninth position, but got off to a less than stellar start, dropping a few positions early in the Stage 1, despite an 8.35-second stop by his team on lap 27. The stage didn’t get any better for Gibbs, between his tires wearing and an ill-handling race car, he ended Stage 1 in 33rd.

Gibbs remained mired back in traffic but a caution on Lap 139 helped him greatly, as several cars in front had already pitted and were on worn tires. He got off pit road in 10th and worked his way through the field the rest of the stage. Gibbs earned stage points with a seventh-place finish, setting him up for the final stage, which was 108 scheduled laps.

Gibbs stayed in the back-half of the top-10 throughout all of Stage 3, and a caution came out with 3 laps to go, with Gibbs running in 11th. The Joe Gibbs Racing No.54 Monster Energy Toyota crew executed again on the final stop, with Gibbs coming out in 10th, and picked up one more spot in the final few laps to finish ninth. Gibbs and his team have endured a lot in the first half of dozen races this season, but a clean race was just what they needed.

“Yeah, it’s nice for sure,” Gibbs said. “I know we’ll get more of those, but it was a good improvement. I’m not too worried; feel like we’ll be okay. Just continue to get everyone reps and figure it out. Excited for what the future holds. Know we’ll be good.”

The next race for the NASCAR Cup Series is the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday, April 13. Live coverage will broadcast on FS1 at 3 p.m. ET.
