DARLINGTON, S.C. – Darrell (Bubba) Wallace Jr. stopped by the Bojangles’ suite in Turn 3 at Darlington Raceway on Friday afternoon and made a surprise visit to meet the Darlington County School District’s top readers.

Each year, a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver visit Darlington County School District’s top readers in the Bojangles’ suite at Darlington Raceway. This year, Wallace visited the kids, signed autographs, posed for photos and handed them their medals for being a top reader. The most exciting aspect of the opportunity is that the kids were able to participate in a Q&A with Wallace who answered an array of questions including:

How many races have you raced in your career?

Answer: Close to 1,000 races.

How many races have you won?

Answer: Way too many to count.

How many states have you visited?

Answer: 40ish

What is the fastest you’ve ever gone in a car?

Answer: 220 mph

The event is an annual opportunity for the Darlington County School District. Each year, the top readers of each class from K-8 earn the trip to Darlington Raceway.

“This is a reward for students reading and bettering themselves,” said Darlington County School District Superintendent Dr. Tim Newman. “They get a chance to come here and celebrate together, and we are so happy that the raceway helps us with this. The whole Darlington Raceway staff has been wonderful to the school district. They’re very proactive with us and with our students, and this is just one of several events that they help us with.”

Bojangles’ has a passion for education as well, so they host the event and serve lunch. Before the kids left the racetrack, Bojangles’ distributed gift bags that included extra books for them to read.

“Today, we had a joint celebration with education with Darlington Raceway and Bojangles’,” said Ken Reynolds, Bojangles’ Director of Corporate and Community Affairs. “So, we both are very passionate in reference to education. Bojangles’ has supported the South Carolina Teacher of the Year for 10 years, so we’re very passionate about education.

“Today, we just wanted to honor the kids and to send them off today with books to read. They were here today because of their achievement in reference to their summer reading program.”

Another cool activity that that the kids were able to participate in was a science project with EdVenture Children’s Museum who were on-site in the suite. The kids crafted little race cars from recycled material.

“We covered Newton’s three laws of force and motion,” said, Charles Calhoun of the EdVenture Children’s Museum in Columbia. “It was a hands-on physics experiment where we talked about how force happens, what matter is, how we can improve on forces, how we stop objects, how we keep objects going. We really try to tie it in with what’s going on here at the track this weekend.”

The Bojangles’ Southern 500 will broadcast live on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) and the Motor Racing Network (MRN) at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 1.
