Joe Gibbs’ Grandson, Ty Gibbs Wins The IceBreaker At Myrtle Beach Speedway
by Hunter Thomas February 2, 2019 0 commentsMYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Ty Gibbs, grandson of former Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, took the lead in the closing laps at Myrtle Beach Speedway on Saturday to win the 4th annual IceBreaker.
With just over 10 laps to go in Myrtle Beach’s season opening event, Gibbs, who started the race in 12th, made his way around Will Burns to take over the lead. Burns had been extremely dominate throughout the afternoon, leading the most laps, but it was Gibbs who saved his tires for the end of the race. After surviving a late-race restart, Gibbs set sail to capture the victory.
Gibbs said, “We kind of got a sucky qualifying position, but we started racing and we worked our way up and worked our way back down, saved and then we were there at the end.”
Gibbs continued and said, “This race wasn’t that long. Just the style of racing was long, because you had to save the tires and everything. We did the best job at saving tires, and we won the race.”
Joe Gibbs, owner of Joe Gibbs Racing was in attendance to see his grandson take the victory. He was absolutely ecstatic over the win. Gibbs was very appreciative of Nelson Motorsports and everyone who helped Ty capture the win.
“When your grandson wins something like this, it’s a huge deal,” Joe Gibbs said. “I don’t think there’s any emotion any bigger in sports. I really appreciate everybody, Timothy’s (Peters) team and everybody here today. I just really appreciate them. The Lord has blessed us.”
The emotional win comes just three weeks after the passing of Joe Gibbs’ son, J.D. Gibbs. Joe urges everyone to visit JDGibbsLegacy.com and watch the memorial service that was held in honor of J.D. On the website, supporters can also donate to the Young Life Ministry through the J.D. Gibbs Legacy Fund.
Finishing second was Ryan Millington, who capped off the 2018 season with a strong third-place finish in the Myrtle Beach 400.
Defending Myrtle Beach Speedway track champion, Justin Milliken finished third. Gibbs and Milliken both had technical support from Nelson Motorsports throughout the race weekend. On the final restart of the 125-lap race, Milliken started alongside of Gibbs, but he just wasn’t fast enough to challenge for the win.
“We had a really good short run speed car all weekend,” Milliken said. “They gave me a really good car, we had a really good engine. Just a little too tight there, and I burnt up the right front, so I decided to fall back and try to put as much money in the bank for the end of the race as I could. I just tried to save what I could, and I know that when we went down into Turn 1 there when we took the green, I didn’t have anything, so I wanted to try and protect the position for the team to get a win, because that’s what’s important, just to put yourself in the position, and Ty put his self in position. We had ourselves in position, and it was a great weekend.”
Unofficially rounding out the top-five were Bradley McCaskill and Jacob Heafner.
Myrtle Beach Speedway will be back in action on Saturday, March 2 for the Spring Fling. There will be twin NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model races. The Chargers, Street Stocks and Vintage Cars are scheduled to compete as well.
