Ross Chastain Wins Mist-Shortened Charbroil 300 At Charlotte Motor Speedway
by Hunter Thomas May 23, 2026 0 commentsCONCORD, NC – Ross Chastain was declared the winner in the mist-shortened NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Charbroil 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday night.
NASCAR did everything it could to get as far as possible on Saturday, but a heavy fog/mist forced the event to come to a close at the conclusion of Stage 2. Chastain was out in front of the field despite having heavy right-side damage from hitting the wall in Turns 1 and 2.
The win marks Chastain’s third in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and his first for JR Motorsports.
Defending series champion, Jesse Love finished runner-up, his sixth top-five of the season. Love started the race mid-pack in 17th, but he finished out Stage 1 in sixth. In the wild closing laps, Love was battling for the win, but he ultimately came up short.
Love’s Richard Childress Racing teammate, Austin Hill finished third. William Sawalich and Corey Day rounded out the top-five. Completing the top-10 was Connor Zilisch, Ryan Sieg, Cole Custer, Carson Kvapil and Rajah Caruth.
The race started off as normal; however, the red flag was displayed for 4 hours 21 minutes and 59 seconds for rain with only 34 laps on the board. Once back underway, it was Justin Allgaier picking up where he left off. Allgaier led most of the way to pick up the win in Stage 1.
When the race returned a little past 10 p.m., the field battled hard to the finish battling the competition on track while navigating the dense mist.
The largest crash of the day occurred on Lap 52, when Brandon Jones was sent sideways entering Turn 3 after contact from behind by Cole Custer. Jones slammed into Brent Crews and slid up into the wall, collecting Harrison Burton.
“I just tried to do the right thing there – and I think it was the right thing to do picking the bottom lane, it just got a little stacked up there, It was hard to get going there in (turns one and two),” Jones said. “The 31 car (Blaine Perkins) held the bottom really well, and I think (Connor) Zilisch and all of them, their plan was probably to put him in the middle of three wide, but that never really happened and it stacked up our lane in turn two. It got me in the middle of a three wide situation, and I got smashed from behind and nowhere to go. We haven’t had many DNFs outside of the one this year, so that hurts.”
The NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series will visit Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday, May 30, for the Sports Illustrated Resorts 250. Live coverage will broadcast on the CW Network at 7:30 p.m. ET.
