DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Rain has paused the 67th running of the Daytona 500 with just 11 laps completed.
The prestigious season-opener at Daytona International Speedway kicked off with President Donald Trump leading the field and providing a message to the drivers before they took the green flag.
Chase Briscoe, who was the first driver to ever start on the pole of the “Great American Race” in a Toyota, led early with help from Bubba Wallace; however, the two drivers fell back, and Ty Dillon and William Byron battled for the lead. Just prior to the rain, Team Penske teammates, Austin Cindric and Joey Logano headed to the front of the field with a ton of steam in a newly created top row.
On Lap 10, the caution came out for rain, and the cars were pulled down pit road as NASCAR displayed the red flag.
Byron leads the race, followed by Cindric, Ty Dillon, Briscoe, Logano, Ross Chastain, Corey LaJoie, Wallace, Kyle Busch, Tyler Reddick and John Hunter Nemechek. All cars are still competing in the race.
As of 3 p.m. ET, weather forecasts suggest that rain will stay in the area until 5 or 6 p.m., but Florida weather can change quickly. Once the current line of storms move through, it’s projected to be a clear evening and night.
UPDATE 6 p.m.: Cars are back on pit road due to rain after running 10 laps under caution. Drivers pitted, and now the top-five consists of Ryan Blaney, Zane Smith, Riley Herbst, Jimmie Johnson and Joey Logano.
UPDATE 6:15 p.m.: Cars are rolling again.
UPDATE 6:22: Back to green with 24 laps completed. Some cars pitted. Top-five: Joey Logano, William Byron, Austin Cindric, Ross Chastain and Chase Briscoe.
