Brandon Clements Takes Victory In Davey Allison Memorial At Carteret County Speedway

PELETIER, N.C. – Brandon Clements picked up his eighth career Late Model victory at Bobby Watson’s Carteret County Speedway on Saturday night, holding off Tim Allensworth to win the Davey Allison Memorial.

The intensity ramped up shortly after a lap 24 restart, following an incident which took Louis White out of the race, when Tyler Horne took Allensworth and Clements three-wide to take the lead.  A few laps later, on lap 30, Clements got to Horne’s rear bumper and was able to make the move to take the lead and the win.

“It’s wonderful when you have a team like this,” Clements said.  “The competition this year seems like it’s stepped up a ton.  I wish the track champion from last year [Chris Burns] was here.  Missing him this week, he’s good competition too.  I want to thank everyone for coming out, it’s crazy times.”

Clements’ win completed a sweep for crew chief Wendell Davis.  Davis also won earlier in the evening when Dylan Newsome picked up the victory in the Charger division.

“Two races, two wins, that’s pretty good,” Davis said.  “Everybody’s doing their homework.”

After starting on the pole and leading the first 24 laps, Allensworth fell as far back as third.  He was able to race his way back up to second on lap 38 but was never able to run Clements down.

“It’s much better to be standing here than trying to piece a car back together to get it and rolled in the trailer,” Allensworth said, alluding to an incident in a recent race at Southern National Motorsports Park.  “Probably used up a little too much stuff trying to get around Horne.  I got the rear out on that restart.  I think, if we could have maintained up front, we would have been hard to pass.”

The runner-up finish ties Allensworth’s best career Carteret County Speedway finish.

Tyler Horne, who is still chasing his first win since 2017, finished third while Ethan Johnson and Daniel Vuncannon rounded out the top-five.

Jacob O’Neal battled his way back to the lead after spinning at the halfway mark of the Allison Legacy Series feature.  O’Neal had been leading when he spun on the race’s 15th lap which put him to the rear of the field.  By lap 25, O’Neal had retaken the lead and drove away with the win in the first Allison Legacy Series feature held at Carteret County Speedway.

“I was really excited to show up here tonight to Carteret,” O’Neal said.  “It’s one of the nicest tracks on the East Coast, especially in North Carolina.  I love the facilities here and everybody’s so nice.  I was really pumped to start on the pole in my second real race in these Allison Legacy Cars.  I was trying to increase my lead a little bit coming out of turn two and lost control.  We saved it, restarted fifth and came back up.  This was a great race and I love all my competitors and everybody at this track.”

Along with a trophy, O’Neal also received a Davey Allison die-cast replica trailer, which was signed by Donnie Allison, from Anthony Goodyear, owner of Atlantic Turfscapes and the operator of the Carteret county Speedway infield restaurant The Goodyears at Moonshinerz.

Ethan Elder finished in second over Laith Tabelsi, Camryn Rice and Clay Abbott.

Tyler Stalls picked up the win in a thrilling Bomber division race in a four-car battle on the last lap with Nick White, Allen Rose and Brandon Robinson.  The victory was his first at Carteret County Speedway.

“I was just throwing it in there on a hope and a prayer,” Stalls said.  “Luckily, [White] got a little loose and he almost got me coming out.  I could get him going in the corner and he got a little loose and gave me just enough.  The four-cylinder had enough to get me across the line.  I thought I was going to be out earlier, she’s doing a little knocking, but I’m in victory lane.”

Brian Loftin picked up the overall victory in Southern Ground Pounders.  Other winners include Caleb Braswell (Jr. Mini Cup), Brenton Irving (Legends), and Mike Cooper (Street Stock).  The results from the Legends race are under review.

The next race at Carteret County Speedway will be on Sunday, September 6th when the track pays homage to its visionary and grand architect, Bobby Watson, with the Bobby Watson Memorial Celebration.  The event will mark the fifth anniversary of the first race held at Carteret County Speedway.  More information about divisions racing will be released in the coming days.
