LONG BEACH, Calif. – Acura Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian topped GTP in the ACURA Grand Prix of Long Beach and Vasser Sullivan Racing placed Lexus back in GTD Victory Lane for the first time in years.

The No. 93 Acura Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian Acura ARX-06 with Nick Yelloly and Renger van der Zande captured the Motul Pole Award on Friday, and on Saturday, used strategy to stay a top contender. Late in the race, van der Zande had command of the race but had to survive two restarts. The final restart came with just over six minutes remaining, but he was able to stay out in front of the field despite hard pressure from Frederik Vesti in the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac.

“I was in the zone,” van der Zande said. “I didn’t need any caution. I was in the zone and pulling away in traffic…I got it done pretty nicely. The Cadillac came so close.”

The win on Saturday marked van der Zande’s third win at Long Beach and the 23rd of his career.

“Winning this one is special,” van der Zande said. “We had to work for it. The Cadillac seemed very, very fast. I was just barely holding on. The rear tires were completely gone…the rear tires were too high of pressure, too high of temperatures, and we did it.”

Vesti and Jack Aitken finished second, followed by the two Porsche Penske Motorsport teams who won the Rolex 24 and 12 Hours of Sebring. The No. 6 Porsche 963 team of Kevin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor finished third, and the No. 7 Porsche 963 team with Felipe Nasr and Julien Andlauer finished fourth. Rounding out the top-five was the BMW M Team WRT No. 24 BMW M Hybrid V8 with drivers Sheldon van der Linde and Dries Vanthoor.

Following the race, Porsche Penske Motorsport’s No. 7 Porsche 963 team continues to lead the WeatherTrch SportsCar Championship standings by 35 points over JDC-Miller MotorSports’ No. 5 Porsche 963 team.

In GTD, it was Aaron Telitz and Benjamin Pedersen piloting the Vasser Sullivan Racing No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3 to victory, snapping a lengthy winless streak and earning the team’s first win in two seasons. In fact, the win marked co-owner Jimmy Vasser’s first Long Beach win since 1996, when he won the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach for Chip Ganassi Racing during his INDYCAR days.

“It’s such a big win for this Vasser Sullivan Lexus organization and SealMaster and for all of our partners that have stuck with us,” Telitz said. “We’ve had a bit of a drought. It has been a couple of years since the RC F went back to Victory Lane but couldn’t be more proud to do it here at the Grand Prix of Long Beach.”

The Lexus RC F GT3 team started from the pole and took command of the race after passing Mason Filippi in the No. 36 DXDT Racing Corvette Z06 GT3.R with just 40 minutes to go. The overall 10th-place effort earned the team the win, which marked Telitz’s sixth-career IMSA class victory, and Pedersen’s first in only three starts.

“I’ve got to give it up to my teammate here,” Pedersen said. “I handed the car off in a good spot, and he brough it home. This piece right here is just on rails all day…Long Beach, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

Finishing second in class was Turner Motorsport’s No. 96 BMW M4 GT3 EVO with drivers Patrick Gallagher and Robby Foley. Third place went to Conquest Racing’s No. 34 Ferrari 296 GT3 EVO with Manny Franco and Albert Costa. Completing the top-five in class was Inception Racing’s No. 70 Ferrari 296 GT3 EVO team and Vasser Sullivan Racing’s No. 89 Lexus RC F GT3 team.

Heart of Racing’s No. 27 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo team leads Turner Motorsport’s No. 96 BMW M4 GT3 EVO team by 54 points in the GTD point standings.
