NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Playoff Race At Darlington Raceway Named Sober Or Slammer 200
by Press Release May 7, 2025 0 commentsDARLINGTON, S.C. – Darlington Raceway announced today that its NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series playoff race on Saturday, Aug. 30, will be named the Sober or Slammer 200. The race name highlights the South Carolina Department of Public Safety’s Sober or Slammer campaign that focuses on curbing impaired driving on South Carolina roadway.
“It is an honor to partner with the South Carolina Department of Public Safety to highlight an initiative that is always top of mind,” said Darlington Raceway President Josh Harris. “The Department does incredible work promoting the importance of responsible driving, and given that this race is on Labor Day Weekend, the Sober or Slammer campaign provides a timely and powerful reminder to celebrate responsibly.”
“The Sober or Slammer campaign remains one of our top initiatives where our troopers and officers work together with local law enforcement partners to reduce the number of impaired drivers on South Carolina roads,” said South Carolina Department of Public Safety Director Robert G. Woods IV. “There is nothing more important to us than making sure everyone gets home safely and that starts with drivers making the right choice before they get behind the wheel impaired.
“This year, we are not only continuing our partnership with NASCAR driver Ross Chastain to promote our Sober or Slammer message; we are also extremely proud to be the entitlement sponsor of the Sober or Slammer 200 race at Darlington Raceway for the Labor Day weekend.”
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety’s Sober or Slammer campaign is an enforcement and education initiative focused on curbing impaired driving on South Carolina roads. This initiative runs in coordination with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over national mobilizations.
The Sober or Slammer campaign emphasizes the importance of always driving sober or designating a sober driver if alcohol or drugs have been used, while also highlighting the consequences of driving impaired. Through driver education and the enforcement of the state’s impaired driving laws, SCDPS seeks to reduce the number of collisions and fatalities caused by impaired drivers.
The two major Sober or Slammer enforcement mobilizations occur during the Labor Day holiday weekend and the Christmas/New Year’s holiday season. Additionally, the Sober or Slammer message can be seen and heard during other holidays throughout the year, including St. Patrick’s Day and Independence Day, through paid advertisements such as billboard messaging, social media posts, radio ads, and gas station TV ads.
The 2025 Labor Day Sober or Slammer campaign features NASCAR driver Ross Chastain as the lead spokesperson. Since 2022, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety has partnered with Chastain to promote the Sober or Slammer message during the Labor Day race weekend at Darlington Raceway. In the newest SCDPS-sponsored public service announcement, Chastain shares the importance of designating a sober driver and reminds the viewers of how dangerous it is to drive under the influence.

The Sober or Slammer 200 on Aug. 30 will serve as the opening act for a Labor Day Weekend to remember at Darlington Raceway. It will be the opening race of the 2025 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Playoffs, as the series’ top 10 drivers will vie for a win that punches their ticket into the Round of 8. And then on Sunday, Aug. 31 the stars of the NASCAR Cup Series will open their playoffs with the Cook Out Southern 500, one of NASCAR’s crown-jewel events and the culmination of Darlington Raceway’s 75th Anniversary celebration.
