DARLINGTON, S.C. – Brandon Brown and Coastal Carolina University unveiled a throwback scheme on Tuesday at Darlington Raceway that honors NASCAR Hall of Famer, Terry Labonte.

Labonte is a two-time winner (1980 and 2003) of the Bojangles’ Southern 500. During the NASCAR Xfinity Series Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200 on Labor Day weekend at the Track Too Tough To Tame, Brown will be piloting the No. 86 Coastal Carolina University Chevrolet that’s a throwback to Labonte’s 1993 Kellogg’s scheme.

“What a great track,” Labonte said. “It (Bojangles’ Southern 500) has always been one of my favorite races down here. What a great weekend. I love it when it’s hot and slick down here. Thanks so much for Brandon for running my throwback car. This car is based on our first year with Kellogg’s in 1993, so it’s very exciting.”

Brown, who is a native of Virginia and a graduate of Coastal Carolina University, has 41 career starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. He has two starts at Darlington Raceway, and in each of them, he finished inside the top-20. In 2017, Brown finished 20th at the track, and last year, he finished 18th.

“This will be my third try at it,” Brown said. “Every time I’ve gained a Darlington Stripe. Last year a little deeper than the first, so I’m hoping that’s as deep as we go with the Darlington Stripes as we race here, but I always have a blast here. It’s just a great time. I really enjoyed taking everything that I’ve learned off the track at Coastal and being able to apply it to the racing and applying it to the team.”

Coastal Carolina University began sponsoring Brown in 2015 when he was competing in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series. The university is located just over an hour away from Darlington Raceway in Conway, South Carolina. The university is in its third year as a partner of Darlington Raceway.

“When we learned that Darlington was going to be selecting 1990 to 1994 for the throwback years, it was just a perfect fit for us,” said Martha Hunn, Interim Vice President for University Marketing and Communication at Coastal Carolina University. “1993 was a very significant year for Coastal Carolina University. That was the year that Coastal Carolina University became an independent public university.”

The NASCAR Xfinity Series Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200 will be held on Saturday, August 31 at Darlington Raceway. Live coverage will broadcast at 4 p.m. ET on NBC and the Motor Racing Network (MRN).
