DARLINGTON, S.C. – Race fans have a chance to win a pace car ride at the Bojangles’ Southern 500 green race at Darlington Raceway. The Labor Day weekend race will be fueled by 100 percent Green Power, distributed by Pee Dee Electric Cooperative and generated by state-owned utility Santee Cooper. To help celebrate Green Power at Darlington Raceway, fans can sign up to win three laps in a pace car on Sunday, Sept. 1, at www.DarlingtonGreenStripe.com.

Also as part of the green race, drivers can earn their “green stripe” on turn two, painted green as a reminder to be kind to the environment.

“We are proud to bring back the green stripe to the track Too Tough To Tame for our Labor Day Weekend event,” said Kerry Tharp, Darlington Raceway president. “Using Green Power on our biggest day of the year is beneficial to all of us and it helps spread the word to race fans that caring for the environment is a priority. We enjoy our strong relationship with our power providers and we’re looking forward to having a great race weekend for our fans.”

Santee Cooper has 28 megawatts of clean, renewable Green Power from sources including six landfill methane gas generating stations, nine solar arrays and one wind turbine. Proceeds from Green Power sales are used to build additional renewable generation and have been used to build 28 Green Power Solar School demonstration projects, 25 of which partner with South Carolina’s electric cooperatives.

Green Power is Green-e Energy certified and meets the environmental and consumer protection standards set forth by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions. Learn more at www.green-e.org. Santee Cooper is the only utility generating certified Green Power that is on South Carolina’s electric grid, and Pee Dee Electric Cooperative promotes Green Power sales to its 30,000 members.

The NASCAR XFINITY Series Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200 race on Saturday, Aug. 31, will also be powered by Green Power. Children 12 and under get in free to Saturday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series race.
