Jordan Lamothe Emerges As Championship Contender In Carteret Legends Division

PELETIER, N.C. – Jordan Lamothe has quietly emerged as a championship contender in the INEX Legends division at Bobby Watson’s Carteret County Speedway with one win on the season and now, he’s hoping to get some momentum going in Saturday night’s Firecracker Clash.

Lamothe, 21, from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, sits just five markers behind points leader Brenton Irving in Carteret County Speedway’s Legends championship standings despite missing one race this season.  Lamothe was vaulted into the championship race when he picked up a win in a wild feature on April 27th.  While a championship is on the back of his mind, his focus is on winning more races.

“We’re happy where we are now,” Lamothe said.  “It’s always in mind for sure but we didn’t think a championship would happen this year.  We just have to keep our nose clean and finish races.  We’re trying to figure out the right setup between night and day.  It’s hard because we qualify during the day and race at night.  We’re very happy with where we are at.  We’ll see what the rest of the season holds.”

Despite being second in points, Lamothe’s win in April is his only top-five finish of the season to date, and when Lamothe won, he did not have the best car.  A last lap entanglement between Brian Sullivan and Emily Day cleared the way, literally, for Lamothe to take home the trophy.

With that in mind, Lamothe has worked tirelessly to get more speed out of his car and qualify better so he can have a strong performance on Saturday night.

“We’re throwing everything we can at the car to try,” Lamothe stated.  “We’re hoping it works.  Hopefully, we can qualify up towards the front like we did last race and we should be good.”

Originally from Woodstock, Connecticut, Lamothe began racing quarter midgets at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park when he was just four years old, eventually graduating to Bandoleros, then Legends where he won eight races.  He even raced some in SK Modifieds, before eventually moving south.

“My dad owned a Late Model and had a team and driver,” Lamothe explained.  “When I was old enough, he sold it all and bought me my first racecar.  So, I started racing at Thompson.  I raced quarter midgets for about seven years, then raced Bandoleros for a couple years at Waterford (Connecticut) Speedbowl, then worked my way into a Legend car at Waterford and Seekonk (Massachusetts) Speedway.  I also ran some open wheel modified races up there as well, then moved south about two years ago.  We ran all over the Charlotte area in Legend Cars and eventually, now, found my way to Carteret.”

His journey to Carteret County comes during a season when Carteret County Speedway is drawing some elite competition in Legends racing as teams from all across North America prepare for the INEX Legends Asphalt Nationals – a three-day event running from October 17th through the 19th which is expected to draw well over 100 cars.

“The competition has been tough for sure,” Lamothe commented.  “Some of the fastest guys on the east coast and beat teams showed up for that $2,500-to-win race in May.  It’s definitely been fun though.  It makes you a better driver for sure if you have better people around you.”

Lamothe said he intends to compete in the INEX Legends Asphalt Nationals as well.

Lamothe will continue his championship battle with Brenton Irving, Emily Day and Brian Sullivan in Saturday’s Firecracker Clash.  Along with Legends, the Firecracker Clash will feature racing for Limited Late Models, Chargers, Mini-Stocks, U-CARs, Champ Karts, Mini Cups and Jr. Mini Cups.  Racing gets underway at 7pm.  Tickets are $15 while kids 10 and under are admitted free of charge.
