NORTH WILKESBORO, NC – Despite the intense heat, Kaden Honeycutt pushed through to sweep both zMAX CARS Tour races at North Wilkesboro Speedway on Friday.
Honeycutt, who is second in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points, started the weekend on the right foot, claiming the pole for the zMAX CARS Tour Skyline National Bank 100 on Thursday. He then proceeded to lead much of the Friday night main event and was out front at the crucial halfway break that flew at Lap 44.
Honeycutt battled with former multi-time zMAX CARS Tour LMSC champion Landen Lewis before pulling away. Despite a late charge by reigning NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion Corey Heim, Honeycutt led the rest of the way for another big victory.
“We really haven’t shown up to the racetrack in the past couple months and, you know, wondered if we’re even going to run top-three,” Honeycutt said. “Every time we go into the racetrack, we know we had a shot to win. So, we definitely weren’t the best car in the Pro class. Had some cautions that helped us out, but execution wise, we did a really good job finishing off the race the last 25 laps.”
Second-place finisher Heim faced a host of challenges late in the race, most notably lap traffic as the laps wound down. After the final yellow, Heim was cutting greatly into Honeycutt’s advantage, but ultimately fell short.
“It’s tough to win truck races and come back and struggle in these things,” Heim said. “But I think it goes to show how challenging this stuff is, you know, it’s no joke. I haven’t won a Late Model race in a little while, and I certainly hope to do that soon so we’re one step closer.”
In third was Jake Bollman, who started the day one spot better and ran there for much of the evening. After the halfway break, Bollman made contact with the aforementioned Lewis, leading to contact that ended Lewis’ day and pushed the No. 71 car back to third, where he remained for the rest of the race.
“This is the best track in the world,” Bollman said. “For short track racing, I know it’s a little bigger than normal short tracks, but you know it puts on a great show, great fans, I mean, look at all of them out here tonight. I know most of them are leaving; it’s the last race of the night, but I mean, they were packed earlier, you know, I think we should come here twice a year, maybe three times.”
Finishing fourth was Connor Hall, and Brenden Queen rounded out the top-five. Carson Kvapil finished sixth, Connor Jones seventh, Chad McCumbee eighth, Carson Loftin ninth, and Carson Brown 10th.
The race featured several cautions throughout, but none that took out multiple cars, as the star-studded lineup seemed to mostly behave itself in the 100-lap main event.
Additionally to Honeycutt’s LMSC win, he claimed victory in the previous zMAX CARS Tour Spears 75 Pro Late Model race, beating out TJ DeCaire in a close finish.
Up next for both zMAX CARS Tour divisions is a trip to Hickory Motor Speedway on Aug. 8, with coverage on FloRacing.
