FLORENCE, S.C. – Charles Powell III has turned many laps at Florence Motor Speedway – and has found victory lane at the four-tenths of a mile track multiple times – but none have more meaning than the 225 upcoming circuits on Nov. 21.

Powell, or CPIII, is one of 33 drivers entered in the late-model race that is part of the Charlie Powell Memorial – South Carolina 400. CPIII is the son of the race’s namesake, legendary Pee Dee racing promoter Charlie Powell, who passed away from complicationsfrom COVID-19 on August 1.

“I am a racer and I always want to be behind the wheel of a car,” said CPIII, who won atFlorence earlier this year despite only racing a handful of times over the last eight years,“but this one is special. This is dad’s race and I really want to go out and honor him and hismemory.

“He meant so much to racing in the area and is the reason many of the guys around hereare able to race. He was a good racer, but a much better promoter.”

Mike Hester, who crew chiefed David Gilliland’s 14th-place effort in the 2018 Daytona 500and has more than 50 starts as a crew chief in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series.Johnny Whittington has helped prepare the car and will serve as the team’s spotter.

“Charlie meant so much to racing around here so when I got the opportunity to help CPIII get a car together for this race, I couldn’t say no,” said Hester. “There are some good driversin the field for the race but we have a great driver and car, so I like our chances of puttingon a good show and getting a good finish.”

The car that CPIII will be driving is leased from Jason York and has found victory lane at Ace Speedway already this year. The car will carry No. 22, Charlie Powell’s number, in the race.

Black’s Tire and Auto Service, Highland Construction and Restoration, Omni Carolina RealEstate, Hoyt + Berenyi, Prince’s Towing, and Action Services.

“The Black’s Tire family is proud to partner with CPIII to honor Charlie,” said Black’s Tireand Auto Service owner Ricky Benton. “Charlie was already a legend when I got involved inracing in the area more than 30 years ago and he will be missed.”

“I truly appreciate the support of all the people who stepped up to help us with this deal,” said CPIII. “With this being dad’s race, I couldn’t miss the chance to run it and it wouldn’t have been possible without their help.”
