Chase Briscoe Earns Championship 4 Berth With YellaWood 500 Win At Talladega Superspeedway
by Hunter Thomas October 19, 2025 0 commentsTALLADEGA, Ala. – Chase Briscoe solidified a berth in the Championship 4 with a win in Sunday’s thrilling YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
On the final lap in NASCAR Overtime, Briscoe was pushing Bubba Wallace to the lead on the backstretch, when Kyle Larson ran out of fuel on the inside line. The break in the bottom lane gave Briscoe an opportunity to make a break for the lead and when he did, Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Ty Gibbs fell in behind him and pushed him to the checkered flag.
“Yeah, that last restart was truthfully trying to push Bubba to the win,” Briscoe said. “I did not want William (Byron) to win. If Larson won, that was a best-case scenario out of Playoff guys. It was really just trying to push Bubba to the win. I felt like that was going to be the best thing for me.
“I don’t know what really happened on the bottom lane, but was able to push Bubba far enough out. Made a move. The 54 (Ty Gibbs) came with me. Ty was the whole reason I won the race. He was extremely committed to me from the get-go. Really did a good job of keeping me up tight to Bubba so I could keep pushing him along.”
The win marked Briscoe’s first superspeedway victory, and it locked him into the Championship 4 at Phoenix Raceway. In five seasons, this will be Briscoe’s debut appearance in the Championship 4, and it has come in his first season with Joe Gibbs Racing.
“So thankful that the Lord has blessed me opening doors, even closing doors at times,” Briscoe said. “Opening an incredible door here with Joe Gibbs Racing. I say it all the time, even today, I had such a peace. Normally I’m scared to death, nervous wreck around this place. I had such a peace that regardless of the finish He was going to use it somehow for His glory. Ends up in Victory Lane.”
Todd Gilliland finished second, earning his best-career finish. Gibbs finished third, while Wallace and Cole Custer rounded out the top-five. Carson Hocevar finished sixth, followed by Tyler Reddick, Christopher Bell, Zane Smith and Brad Keselowski.
Aside from Briscoe, Bell was the only other Playoff driver to finish inside the top-10.
“Oh my gosh,” Bell said. “I don’t know. That was one of the most stressful races that I’ve been a part of. I’m just trying to process it right now. Obviously, I’m super happy for Chase (Briscoe) to get another JGR car into the Championship 4. Really cool for him. I’m just trying to soak it all in right now – I don’t know what to think.”
Team Penske led the most laps of the race; however, Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney didn’t get the finishes they were hoping for. Logano finished 16th, and Blaney finished 23rd.
“It’s pretty apparent the second we lost control of the race,” Logano said. “I’m only driving one car, so I couldn’t really control the race. The car behind me was saving gas, that didn’t help us and killed the whole bottom lane. Cars were pulling in front of us and we were just getting demoted from the first two cars in line to the back of the line.”
Blaney said, “Not the finish we wanted. We didn’t do what we needed to do and we didn’t get help when we needed it. Now we have to go win next week.”
For the first time since 2013, Hendrick Motorsports didn’t have a driver finish inside the top-24.
William Byron spun in the trioval on the final lap and finished 25th.
“Certainly, a finish would have helped us be a little bit closer on the points side of things,” Byron said. “We just lost control of the race. We just couldn’t get the pushes going the way we needed to on the bottom lane. We got the outside lane clear down in front of us, and then the No. 5 (Kyle Larson) ran out of fuel there on the backstretch and that kind of broke up the energy a little bit more. We just couldn’t get it linked back together. It was just wrong place, wrong time. I felt like we were in a good spot where I was on the bottom, but we just couldn’t get linked up.”
Larson finished 26th after running out of fuel on the final lap.
“It was flashing at me through (turns) one and two,” Larson said. “I was just hoping that maybe we could make it, but midway down the back, it started stumbling and I just got out of the way. It’s unfortunate. I’d rather have a bigger points cushion heading into next weekend, but we’ll regroup and focus on Martinsville (Speedway).”
Chase Elliott finished 40th after being caught up in a Lap 53, nine-car crash.
“I saw someone get turned sideways,” Elliott said. “I was trying to get slowed up like normal. I ended up getting turned sideways into some other cars, and then they slid back into me. I’m not really sure… I hate it. I felt like we had ourselves in a good spot before the pit cycle. I didn’t feel like we executed the cycle very well and that put us back in the back again. I’m not sure if that would have helped us miss the wreck or not. Obviously, all of that is very circumstantial, but nonetheless, it is what it is.”
With one race to go in the Round of 8, Briscoe and Denny Hamlin are the only two drivers locked in. Bell is +37, and Larson is +36. Below the cutline is Byron (-36), Logano (-38), Blaney (-47) and Elliott (-62)
The NASCAR Cup Series will visit Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, Oct. 26 for the Xfinity 500. Live coverage will broadcast on NBC at 2 p.m. ET.
