DARLINGTON, S.C. – On Tuesday night, Darlington Raceway, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and local political leaders thanked the community for successfully selling out reserved seating for the 70th running of the Bojangles’ Southern 500 back on Labor Day weekend.

Community leaders and individuals who played a role in promoting the 2019 Bojangles’ Southern 500 gathered in the Cale Yarborough Garage to celebrate the first sellout at the track Too Tough To Tame since 2008. Back in September, fans from nearly all 50 states and 12 different countries contributed to the sellout.

Gov. McMaster joined Darlington Raceway President Kerry Tharp and Darlington County Coroner J. Todd Hardee as keynote speakers for the event on Tuesday. During Gov. McMaster’s speech, he noted that the patriotism, southern hospitality and unique, handshake way South Carolinians do business is why the state has become so popular and has found success in business here in the United States of America and overseas. He also said that Darlington Raceway features those traits and is a positive reflection on the state.

“Being a South Carolinian is a very important thing, and that is why people are coming from around the world to be in South Carolina,” Gov. McMaster said. “Because the people are strong, and they tell me, and they say it in different languages, whether they’re from Europe or Korea or Sweden or China, wherever they’re coming from, they say the people of South Carolina, they’re a handshake state. When they give you their word, they keep it.”

Gov. McMaster continued and said, “What we see here is that kind of spirit that is demonstrated and the excellence and the competition is exhibited every time we have race day here in Darlington is an enormous, positive reflection on the state of South Carolina.”

J. Todd Hardee spoke about the historic sellout from a local point of view, noting that over the past 70 years, the community and surrounding areas have helped Darlington Raceway keep its crown jewel status on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule.

Tharp was very humbled by the support of the community and fans who attended this year’s Bojangles’ Southern 500. While Tharp is a native of Kentucky, he has spent the majority of his life living in the Palmetto State. Tharp believes that with the 2020 Bojangles’ Southern 500 kicking off the NASCAR Playoffs, all eyes will be on the small town of Darlington.

The 71st running of the Bojangles’ Southern 500 will be run on Sunday, September 6, 2020.
