DARLINGTON, S.C. – William Byron won the pole for the 70th running of the Bojangles’ Southern 500 after running a lap of 28.51 seconds at 172.487 mph.

Byron pole on Saturday at Darlington Raceway marked the fourth of his career. The 21-year-old is well above the Playoff cutline in 12th, but he is winless so a victory in the crown jewel race would certainly be a career highlight for the Charlotte, North Carolina native. At Darlington Raceway this weekend, Byron was second fastest in opening practice and third in final practice.

“The car was really good for us,” Byron said. “We luckily did a mock run yesterday. We had enough time to do one at the end of the first practice session and I feel like that helped us just propel our qualifying effort a little bit more. We kind of knew what the grip level was going to be like and kind of what our balance was going to be. It’s good to have the No. 24 City Chevrolet on the pole and we’ll just see what we can do for 500 miles.”

Byron’s only Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start at Darlington Raceway came last year. He started that race in 10th, but his car suffered and engine failure in the late stages of the race.

Defending Bojangles’ Southern 500 winner, Brad Keselowski will start alongside of Byron on Sunday. The driver of the Team Penske No. 2 Miller Ford was just 0.066 off of Byron’s lap.

Kyle Larson will start third, followed by Kurt Busch and Daniel Suarez rounding out the top-five.

The Bojangles’ Southern 500 will broadcast live on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) and the Motor Racing Network (MRN) at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 1.
