With Three National Champions In The Field, Late Model Racing Just Got Tighter At South Boston Speedway

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – With more than a decade of competition at South Boston Speedway, Peyton Sellers has always known he has to show up perfectly prepared to compete for wins at the ultra-competitive track.

And he knows this year is going to be more difficult than ever.

It’s old news now that three NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champions, Sellers, Philip Morris and Lee Pulliam are competing in South Boston’s Late Model Series on a regular basis in 2019. For the record, there is a total of 10 national championship between them. Morris, the defending national champ, has five, Pulliam four and Sellers one.

And in last Saturday afternoon’s season-opener they were all in championship form. Pulliam won the first of two 100-lap races, Morris the second one and Sellers finished second in both events. Sellers also set a track record in qualifying.

“Honestly we put everything in every race we ever run. We always have,” said Sellers, a four-time South Boston champion. “Now, though, we are working to find hundreds of a second. I missed it in the first race by a half-a-tenth a lap. If I have that, I win the race.  That’s what we have to look for this year, the small subtle changes that will pick up just a bit for us.”

It’s rare to have three national champions in the field at one weekly track and Sellers says the big winners this season are going to be the fans.

“Everybody is going to have a lot more to talk about now. There are three of the best Late Model teams in the country going against each other for the win each week,” said Sellers.

“Me, Lee and Philip all had close racing through both races and from fourth on back the racing was good. There was racing through the field all day.”

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour 150 on Saturday afternoon, March 30, will feature the 150-lap Modified race and the two 75-lap Late Model Stock races.

Advance adult general admission tickets are $10 each and will be available until 5 p.m. on Friday March 29 by stopping in South Boston Speedway’s office or calling 877.440.1540. Adult general admission tickets on race day will be $15. Children 12-and-under will be admitted free with a paying adult.

Grandstands open at 11:30 a.m. on March 30 with an autograph session at 1 p.m. and the first race of the day starting at 2 p.m.
