CONCORD, N.C. – Dale Earnhardt Jr. slapped the wall early in opening practice for the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Earnhardt Jr. was rounding Turn 4, when his Hendrick Motorsports No. 88 Nationwide Chevrolet slid up the track and pounded the outside wall. The contact with the wall was such a hard impact that the team had to unload the backup car. Earnhardt Jr. only completed eight laps during the session. He was 26th on the speed chart with 28.757-second lap at 187.780 mph.

“I don’t know,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “I got into this black stuff and it just took off into the fence. I think the car was pretty good, but had to pull a back-up out. It should be fine though. It’s a good thing that it happened early and we will get to practice tomorrow and get to work on it.”

The North Carolina native enters the weekend coming off a seventh-place finish at Dover, only his fifth top-10 of the 2017 season.

Earnhardt Jr. finished 10th back in may during the Coca-Cola 600, so he’s looking to continue the strong performance at Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend. He didn’t compete in last year’s Bank of America 500 last year due to concussion-like symptoms.

Coors Light Pole Qualifying for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series begins at 7:20 p.m. ET. Live coverage will broadcast on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN).
