Schuchart Passes Sweet In Final Laps Of Outlaw Showdown To Win In Charlotteby Hunter Thomas May 26, 2017 0 comments
CONCORD, N.C. – Logan Schuchart completed a bold pass on Brad Sweet for the lead with just two laps to go to win his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car feature at The Dirt Track at Charlotte on Friday night.
Kasey Kahne Racing’s Brad Sweet started on the pole of the Outlaw Showdown, and he led the entire race until he was passed in Turn 2 by Schuchart on lap 28. Schuchart had been chasing Sweet through heavy lapped traffic before he made the daring slide job. The win is the Pennsylvania native’s third of the 2017 season. He won at Keller Auto Speedway back in March and Eldora Speedway two weeks ago.
“I had a chance at Brad earlier in the race and I went to go in the corner and slide him just like I did (with two laps to go), but my throttle stuck and ran me way too far into the corner,” Schuchart said. “It’s great to win anywhere but to win in front of Charlotte’s fans, this is what makes our sport. … I have a great group of people behind me in the Shark Racing family. Brad drove a great race and I couldn’t catch him for a while, but some lapped cars got in his way and they helped me out. That’s what makes racing exciting. We were able to capitalize at the right time.”
Sweet battled back and was side-by-side with Schuchart in the final corner of the 30-lap race, but he was unable to pull off the pass and had to settle for the runner-up finish.
“If you look at the overall night it was good for us, but obviously you hate to lose one like that,” Sweet said. “I don’t want to be a poor sport. Logan drove a great race. I struggled to get by those lapped cars. I just got stuck there. That’s what wins you or loses you those races. He did the better job there at the end and I just kind of got caught. I was a sitting duck. I’d kind of burned my tires out. I didn’t drive a great race, but hats off to our NAPA guys. They worked hard. It was good to put on a show for this great crowd.”
Daryn Pittman, Sweet’s teammate stayed in contact with the front two runners all race long, but he finished third. Rounding out the top-five was Donny Schatz and Greg Wilson.
Completing the top-10 was Kraig Kinser who started second, followed by Shane Stewart, David Gravel, Jacob Allen and Sheldon Haudenschild.
There were no cautions throughout the Outlaw Showdown.
Up next on the schedule for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Cars is the Memorial Day Spectacular presented by KOI Auto Parts at Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway on Monday, May 29.
