DILLON, S.C. – A record number of race cars took to the track at Dillon Motor Speedway during the optional practice on Friday.

Throughout the day, Street Stock, Charger, Four Cylinder and Banger teams from all over the country made adjustments their cars in preparation for the 7th annual New Year’s BASH.

“There are a ton of cars here,” said Street Stock driver, Jeff Melton. “This is like our Daytona 500 race.

“I can’t wait to see the top-20 qualifying because the times are so close by just what I’ve seen in practice. You have one guy that’s a little quicker and then in the next practice, you have a couple of guys quicker than him. From what I’ve seen, there are 10 cars all over the top of each other already.”

The prestigious event was originally scheduled for January 6-7; however, winter weather forced the speedway to reschedule.

On Saturday, gates will open at 9 a.m., followed by practice at 10 a.m. Qualifying will begin at noon and then race will get underway at 2 p.m. The Street Stocks will compete for $500 in a 25-lap B-Main and then $2,000 in a 107-lap A-Main. The Charger feature will be 50 laps long with a purse of $800, and the Four Cylinders will also compete for 50 laps, and their purse will be $600.

Grandstand tickets are only $15, while kids 11 years old and younger enter the gates for free.

Below are a few photos that Hunter Thomas captured during the optional practice on Friday at the track.
