RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond International Raceway (RIR) will host the inaugural Checkered Flag 5K & Kids Fun Run to start the spring race weekend in 2017. In partnership with the Richmond Road Runners, the race will take runners around the RIR property and onto the historic track surface, finishing the last leg of the race crossing the official RIR finish line. Participants of this unique new family race, now have the opportunity to run where legends have run.

The Checkered Flag 5K and Kids Fun Run will take place on Thursday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m. Participants will cross the historic RIR finish line days before NASCAR’s best take to the track in the TOYOTA OWNERS 400 NASCAR Premier Series race and the ToyotaCare 250 NASCAR XFINITY Series race on April 28-30.

“The inaugural Checkered Flag 5K & Kids Fun Run will open our family-friendly spring race weekend with a fun, impactful event for our community,” said RIR President Dennis Bickmeier. “Through the partnership with the Richmond Road Runners, we will give 5K participants a driver’s view of RIR and raise funds for our non-profit arm, RIR Cares.”

Upon crossing the RIR finish line in the footsteps of NASCAR legends, participants will celebrate with post-race festivities including photos in Gatorade Victory Lane, food trucks and craft beer on pit road, and receive an official Checkered Flag 5K & Kids Fun Run hat.

NASCAR greats like Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and Jimmie Johnson have stepped foot on this hallow ground. Now 5K participants can add their name to the list of legends who have crossed the famed RIR finish line.
