FLORENCE, S.C. – Justin Shorter has been voted TheFourthTurn’s 2016 Most Popular Driver of the Year Presented by Milligan’s Painting Co.

The site’s inaugural Most Popular Driver of the Year poll featured more than 200 drivers, who competed at Dillon Motor Speedway, Florence Motor Speedway and Myrtle Beach Speedway throughout the 2016 season. The poll began on Thursday, November 17, and it ended on Monday, December 26. After more than 40,000 votes were casted, Manning, South Carolina native, Justin Shorter, was announced the winner on Wednesday afternoon.

Shorter began racing go-karts, when he was only 13-years old. He competed in the karts until he was 24-years old; however, for the past 12 years, he has been piloting a Late Model. Shorter primarily competes at Florence Motor Speedway, considering it’s under an hour drive from his home. He says that he also loves to race at both, Dillon Motor Speedway and Myrtle Beach Speedway, when he has the time to travel to other tracks.

In 2016, Shorter’s main priority wasn’t racing, instead, it was beating cancer. Due to enduring cancer treatments at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, Shorter only had the time and energy to compete in four regular season races at Florence Motor Speedway. Miraculously, he was able to win all four Late Model events with the help of fellow racer, Averitt Lucas and Lucas Fabrications. In the 17th annual Fall Classic, Florence Motor Speedway’s prestigious season-ending race, Shorter qualified on the pole and finished third.

“We raced the big year-end race at Florence, which we sat on the pole and finished third,” Shorter said. “We were leading the race with eight laps to go, and a caution caused us to fall to third on the restart.”

Just before Christmas, Shorter was blessed with the best news of his life. All of his pathology test results came back negative, and he was cancer free!

“I would like for those, who have cancer to know that there is hope and God answers all prayers no matter how small or large,” Shorter said. “Always keep fighting!”
