Kevin Harvick Tops Opening Practice For The Bank of America 500 At Charlotte Motor Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. – Kevin Harvick topped the speed chart on Thursday during opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Harvick, a three-time winner at Charlotte ran a lap of 27.870 seconds at 193.757 in practice. The driver of the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 4 Busch Hunting Chevrolet SS is one of the Round of 12 drivers competing for the championship. In last year’s Bank of America 500, he finished second, and during this year’s Coca-Cola 600, Harvick also piloted his car to a runner-up finish.

Second fastest in practice was Alex Bowman, who is subbing for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Bowman’s fastest lap during practice in the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88 Axalta Chevrolet SS was an effort of 27.996 mph at 192.885 mph. Bowman has had four previous starts in Earnhardt Jr.’s car. His best finish so far is a 10th that he captured at Chicagoland Speedway back in September.

Martin Truex Jr. was third fastest in practice. The car that he is driving this weekend won the Coca-Cola 600 in May and then again at Chicagoland Speedway. Earlier today, Furniture Row Racing announced that Charlotte-based company, Maaco will be featured on the No. 78 Toyota Camry this weekend.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin were fourth and fifth respectively. Kyle Larson, AJ Allmendinger, Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch completed the top-10.

Kasey Kahne has the best 10 consecutive lap average throughout the session. His average speed was 188.561 mph. Kyle Busch was second with an average speed of 187.616 mph, and Denny Hamlin was third with an average speed of 187.142 mph.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coors Light Pole Qualifying is set to begin at 7:20 p.m. ET tonight. Qualifying will broadcast live on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN).
