Richard Childress Racing Announces Additions to XFINITY Driver Lineupby Kyle Pokrefky June 8, 2016 0 comments
Richard Childress Racing’s ‘star car’ in the NASCAR XFINITY Series is going to feature several new drivers in it over the next several weeks in this summer stretch.
The team announced on Wednesday afternoon that A.J. Allmendinger, Sam Hornish Jr., Ben Kennedy and Michael McDowell will each run in partial schedules in the team’s No. 2 Chevrolet Camaro.
Allmendinger will race the car at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in a one-off start that coincides with an off weekend for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Hornish Jr. will make his return to NASCAR in two starts for the team in series standalone races for the team at Iowa Speedway in July and at Kentucky Speedway in September.
Kennedy will pilot the entry in Iowa’s June date next weekend in what is a companion weekend with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, a series he currently competes in with GMS Racing.
McDowell, no stranger to running the road courses for the XFINITY Series’s major teams, will drive in late-August’s race at Road America.
Richard Childress Racing’s Sprint Cup series regulars Austin Dillon and Paul Menard have thus far split the seat time for the No. 2 Chevrolet this season with Dillon taking the car to victory lane at Auto Club Speedway in March.
Through 12 races thus far, the No. 2 entry presently sits third in the XFINITY Series’s owner standings – 22 points behind the lead.
“We’re working hard to put together a driver lineup that allows us to compete for the XFINITY Series owner’s championship,” Mike Dillon, Richard Childress Racing’s vice president of competition, said. “With Ben, Sam, AJ and Michael joining Austin and Paul in the No. 2 Camaro seat, I’m confident we’ll be able to challenge for the title this season and be a threat to win in each of the races.”
