BROOKLYN, Mich. — Rookie Chase Elliott paced the field in first practice for the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway on Friday in an 85-minute session chocked full of fast speeds.
Elliott, driver of the No. 24 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet, completed a lap of 35.709 seconds to pace the opening session of the weekend for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Martin Truex Jr., Carl Edwards, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kevin Harvick completed the top-five of the session’s standings as Denny Hamlin, Austin Dillon, Brad Keselowski, Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch rounded out the top-10.
Other notable drivers on the speed chart were Ryan Blaney in 11th, Kyle Busch in 13th, Kyle Larson in 14th, Joey Logano in 17th, Chris Buescher in 19th and Tony Stewart in 20th.
The top-12 drivers on the speed chart managed to eclipse the 200 miles-per-hour figure during the session.
Kyle Busch was one of two drivers to make a run of 10 or more consecutive laps during the session and averaged a speed of 194.145 miles per hour over his run.
Busch also completed the most laps of the session with 26. Reed Sorenson – the slowest driver of the session – completed the fewest with only two laps to his credit.
Qualifying for the FireKeepers Casino 400 is up next for the Sprint Cup crew with a start time scheduled for 4:15 p.m ET. Today’s three rounds of qualifying will wrap up Friday’s on-track action for the series.
