Tanner Foust Sweeps The Red Bull Global Rallycross Opening Weekend

PHOENIX, Ariz. – On Saturday and Sunday, the Red Bull Global Rallycross kicked off the 2016 season with a double-header at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Phoenix. The entire weekend was dominated by Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross pilot Tanner Foust, who won both rounds, notching his series all-time leading eighth and ninth victories.

Saturday

Tanner Foust and his Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross crew picked up where they left off last season by dominating the weekend. Foust was the fastest in practice, he dominated the heats and semi-final and he claimed the victory from the pole by more than five seconds over Patrik Sandell and Brian Deegan.

“I like the track,” Foust said. “It’s a real Jekyll and Hyde kind of a track. You’ve got the road course, where you need to be real buttery smooth, and you’ve got that chaotic gravel when you are coming over the jump with tire stacks at 80 miles per hour. So there is a lot of the fun factor and technical spots!”

Both Sandell and Deegan overcame gearbox and turbo issues respectively to start the season strongly in their Ford Fiestas. Rounding out the top-five was Steve Arpin and 2015 Red Bull Global Rallycross champion Scott Speed, who dropped from third place in the latter stages.

The new Honda Civic Supercar showed great potential by making the final with drivers, Joni Wiman and Sebastien Eriksson; however, both drivers ended up in strife and retired in the late stages with mechanical issues, which resulted in small fire for Eriksson. The pace from the new car is impressive but teething problems are always prominent with new race car programs.

It was not all bad for Olsbergs MSE as they claimed victory in the GRC Lites category with rookie Miki Weckstrom winning in his very first start. Weckstrom was joined on the podium by DirtFish Motorsports’ Conner Martell and AF Racing’s Christian Brooks.

Sunday:

It was more of the same on day two as Tanner Foust claimed the weekend sweep and his 9th career victory. Foust was once again the driver to beat as he drove away from the ensuing pack of snarling 600 horsepower race cars. Foust’s Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Supercar had the best compromise of tire wear, handling and out right speed throughout the event.

“It’s going to be a great season—obviously it’s a great way to start the season for Volkswagen,” Foust said. “But different cars have different skills on different tracks, so it’s going to be a mix up. A lot of the new cars out there are extremely fast, and it’s going to be a great season!”

The Beetles are showing, at least early, that they are the cars to beat with Foust and Speed sweeping the heats on Sunday and then finishing in the top-two. On the bottom step of the podium was the Honda of Sebastien Eriksson, claiming the first podium for the Civic Coupe after an intense battle with the rapid Patrik Sandell. Rounding out the top-five was another consistent run for Steve Arpin.

Foust now has a 25-point lead over his nearest rival, Scott Speed heading into Round Three in Dallas, Texas on Saturday June 4. Coverage of the event will broadcast live on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) at 2:30 p.m.
