Greg Wilson Makes Last Lap Pass On Shane Stewart For Win In Charlotte

CONCORD, N.C. – Greg Wilson passed Shane Stewart in the final turns on Friday night to win the Circle K NOS Energy Outlaw Showdown at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

Daryn Pittman started on the pole with Cole Duncan alongside of him. Shane Stewart passed Duncan for the race lead on lap 5. Stewart was out front for the next five laps, but a caution for Paul McMahan stopped in Turn 2 brought the field back together.

On the restart, Stewart jumped way out in front of the pack for a commanding lead. As the laps clocked away and the field reached lap 16, Stewart began to maneuver his way through lapped traffic. Stewart led Joey Saldana, Cole Duncan, Greg Wilson and Daryn Pittman with only 10 laps to go.

The final caution of the night came out on lap 24, when Jason Sides stopped on the frontstretch. The late-race caution lined the field up for an intense six-lap shootout. Once the field went back to green, Stewart and Cole Duncan had a fierce battle for the race lead.

Greg Wilson passed Shane Stewart on the last lap as they entered Turn 3. Wilson was able to make the winning move on the low side, as Stewart appeared to have missed his mark on the high side.

“Obviously we hated to lose a race like that, but hats off to Greg,” Stewart said. “I guess it was taking a little bit of rubber down there in (Turns) 3 and 4, and I just totally missed it. Normally this year, we have been really bad on a slick track and so, I was happy to actually lead some races. Those cars were really a lot better than I was in the Dash, the 22 (Cole Duncan) especially.”

The win marks Wilson’s first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory at the track, and it’s also the second of his career. Wilson started the 30-lap A-Main in the fifth position.

“Yea, I never dreamt in my wildest dreams that I’d ever get this opportunity,” Wilson said. “I’ve been blessed to get to run with the World of Outlaws this year and man, to do it in Charlotte, in front of all of these fans – this is badass.”

Wilson continued and said, “It’s all surreal right at the moment, but my mom and dad and stepmom are at home, and they’ve been a huge part of my career and getting me where I am today.”

Finishing behind Wilson and Stewart was Cole Duncan, Daryn Pittman and Donny Schatz, completing the top-five.

Up next on the schedule for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series schedule is a trip to Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana on Monday, May 30.
