Jamie McMurray on Top in First GEICO 500 Practiceby Kyle Pokrefky April 29, 2016 0 comments
Jamie McMurray’s No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet paced the field on Friday in first practice for Sunday’s GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
The first of two sessions for the day for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the early afternoon’s 55-minute session featured a mixture of both single-car mock qualifying runs and the pack racing that is to be expected on Sunday.
The quickest speeds came in the pack racing simulations with the average speeds for a single lap for the session leaders just barely missing the 200 miles-per-hour mark.
Following the No. 1 Chevrolet on the speed chart were three other Hendrick Motorsports-powered Chevrolet drivers – Chase Elliott, Kurt Busch and Danica Patrick. From there, Trevor Bayne, Kevin Harvick, Casey Mears, Joey Logano, Kyle Larson and Michael McDowell completed the top-10 of the session’s standings.
Other notable drivers on the speed chart were Kyle Busch in 15th, Austin Dillon in 18th, Matt Kenseth in 21st, Martin Truex Jr. in 22nd and Ty Dillon in 29th.
Dillon practiced the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet for Tony Stewart, who is to yield the No. 14 seat to Dillon following the first caution of Sunday’s race.
Fastest over a run of 10 consecutive laps was Larson, who paced the field in that aspect with an average speed of 195.541 miles per hour. Next fastest on the list were Logano, Harvick, Bayne and Denny Hamlin.
Of the non-charter drivers in the field for the weekend, Michael Waltrip was fastest in the 12th position with Ryan Blaney and David Gilliland right behind him in 13th and 14th. Josh Wise was the slowest non-charter driver with the 35th-fastest time in the session.
Second practice for the GEICO 500 is set to start at 4:30 p.m ET and run until 5:25 p.m ET.
