Cunningham Motorsports has made a major driver announcement just two races into the ARCA Racing Series season, announcing that Blake Jones will return to the No. 22 car next week at Salem Speedway.
Jones, 19, will take over the seat from Kevin Thomas Jr, who was originally scheduled to run the full season for the team in the No. 22 entry.
Thomas Jr., a USAC National Sprint Car Series standout, was dropped from the ride due to a financial situation according to the Cunningham organization.
Jones made three starts with the Cunningham organization last year at Daytona International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Michigan International Speedway.
The Sevierville, Tenn. native handed the team their first victory of the season last year at Talladega in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame 200.
Jones closed out the 2015 ARCA season with Lira Motorsports at Iowa Speedway, Berlin Raceway and at Salem Speedway. In his start at Salem last year, Jones finished in the 19th position, yet turned in top-10s at Iowa and Berlin.
“I couldn’t be any more excited to have the opportunity to be back in the Cunningham Motorsports car at one of my favorite tracks,” Jones said. “I can’t wait to hop in the fast Ford that my hard-working team will bring to Salem.”
Jones will be one of several drivers to pilot the No. 22 car through the remainder of the season. Additional driver announcements for the car are expected in the future, prior to each race.
In their announcement this afternoon, Cunningham Motorsports also stated their hopes that Thomas Jr. will return to the No. 22 car for future starts this season.
