Regan Smith Takes Over No. 7 Chevy for Tommy Baldwin Racingby Kyle Pokrefky January 21, 2016 0 comments
Following the news from Thursday afternoon that Tommy Baldwin Racing and Alex Bowman have parted ways, the team has announced that Regan Smith will take over as driver of their No. 7 Chevrolet.
Having spent the last three seasons full-time in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, Smith will make his full-time Sprint Cup Series return this season behind the wheel of TBR’s Toy State/Nikko RC/Road Rippers machine.
Smith has 176 career starts at the Sprint Cup level with a lone victory coming with Furniture Row Racing at Darlington Raceway in 2011.
Alongside of his win are two other top-five and 10 other top-10 finishes.
“This has been a crazy few days, but I’m really excited that we were able to put this together,” Smith said. “I have a ton of respect for Tommy and what he’s built there. It’s going to be a lot of fun.
“Our son Rhett turns one next month, so I’ll be putting in my request for some Road Rippers cars. That’s a pretty good perk too.”
Smith, a native of Cato, N.Y., will take over the reins of TBR’s flagship vehicle that finished the 2015 season 35th in the owners standings with Bowman behind the wheel.
In a statement released on his team’s website, TBR owner Tommy Baldwin praised the skills of Smith and the quality of a driver that he is, stating that his presence on the team elevates its status.
“This is a really great time for us,” Baldwin stated. “Having a driver with Regan’s credentials further elevates our program. He’s a seasoned driver and a proven race winner. We’re really looking forward to 2016.”
