Alex Bowman Entering Nine Races for JR Motorsports in 2016by Kyle Pokrefky November 12, 2015 0 comments
Sophomore Sprint Cup Series driver Alex Bowman will get a taste of the NASCAR XFINITY Series in 2016 as he is to race for JR Motorsports on a partial schedule next season.
Bowman, 22, will compete in the team’s No. 88 Chevrolet for nine races next season with sponsorship for his effort to be announced at a later date.
The Tucson, Ariz. native’s 2016 schedule will consist of races at Dover International Speedway (May 14th), Pocono Raceway (June 4th), Iowa Speedway (June 19th), New Hampshire Motor Speedway (July 16th), Watkins Glen International (August 6th), Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (August 13th), Richmond International Raceway (September 9th), Dover (October 1st) and Phoenix International Raceway (November 12th.)
His 2016 schedule won’t be his first experience with the organization as he made two starts with the team in the XFINITY Series in 2014 and a single start in the Camping World Truck Series with them this year.
“This is such a great opportunity,” Bowman said. “Being able to race in top-notch equipment with a team like JR Motorsports is all I could ask for, really.
“I had a good experience driving for them in the past and I know we’ll be competing for wins next year. That’s a great feeling.”
Bowman has 41 career starts in the XFINITY Series with two top-fives, six top-10s and two Coors Light Pole Awards scored to his credit. In his lone full season in the series with RAB Racing in 2013, Bowman finished 11th in the drivers standings.
Alongside of his nine-race XFINITY schedule for 2016, Bowman will return to his No. 7 Tommy Baldwin Racing machine in the Sprint Cup Series for next season as well.
“Alex is a very strong addition to our team,” Kelley Earnhardt Miller, general manager of JR Motorsports, said. “That’s evident from the talent he’s displayed in the XFINITY Series and at the Cup level.
“Given that he has already raced for JR Motorsports, this is a natural fit. The No. 88 team has set the bar high and we’re confident it will continue that trend with Alex in 2016.”
With the addition of Bowman to the 2016 stable, the No. 88’s driver roster has now been filled for 19 of the 33 races that make up the 2016 calendar with Bowman, Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne and team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. thus far being confirmed for the ride.
2014 series champion and 2016 Sprint Cup rookie Chase Elliott is expected to make several starts in the car next season as well.
The No. 88 ‘star car’ will race alongside JR Motorsports’s two full-time drivers for the 2016 XFINITY campaign – Justin Allgaier and Elliott Sadler.
