DARLINGTON, S.C. — It’s a throwback weekend for the Sprint Cup Series at Darlington Raceway as 43 drivers prep for tonight’s Bojangles’ Southern 500.

With that, it’d be appropriate to take a look at the historical trends entering tonight’s prestigious race.

6 – Number of drivers who claimed their first career Sprint Cup victory at Darlington Raceway – Johnny Mantz 1950, Nelson Stacy 1961, Larry Frank 1962, Terry Labonte 1980, Lake Speed 1988 and Regan Smith 2011.

6.9 – Denny Hamlin’s average finish at Darlington Raceway, the lowest of all active drivers with eight or more starts at the track.

7 – Number of wins Jeff Gordon has at Darlington Raceway, the most of all active drivers.

7 – Number of former Darlington winners in the field for tonight’s race – Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth.

2007 – The last year in which Jeff Gordon, the winningest of all active drivers at Darlington Raceway, went to victory lane at the track.

2010 – The last year in which the winner of the weekend’s accompanying XFINITY Series event went on to win the Bojangles’ Southern 500. Denny Hamlin accomplished the feat in 2010 and he is the winner of yesterday’s VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200.
