WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — Joey Logano and Kyle Larson were the respective leaders of two practice sessions held on Friday for Saturday’s Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International.

Logano paced the first session of the day in a second Team Penske Ford Mustang with a lap of 72.028 seconds, quick enough to fend off his teammate, Brad Keselowski, for the top spot in the session by 98-thousandths of a second.

Brendan Gaughan, Paul Menard, Larson, Chris Buescher, Brian Scott, Regan Smith, Boris Said and Chase Elliott respectively rounded out positions three-through-10 in the opening 85-minute session.

Larson posted the fastest speed in the final practice session of the weekend with his lap of 71.346 seconds.

Logano, Menard, Ty Dillon, Keselowski, Buescher, Scott, Smith, Gaughan and Elliott Sadler rounded out the top-10 of the closing 55-minute session’s speed chart.

Friday’s opening practice session was highlighted by a hard impact by rookie Daniel Suarez into the tire barriers on the right hander known as the carousel. The driver of the No. 18 ARRIS Toyota emerged from his damaged race car under his own power and was checked and released from the infield care center.

Defending series champion Elliott also found his share of troubles in the final session with a mechanical issue causing the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet to stop on the track.

Following practice, Elliott explained what he felt went sour on his ride for the weekend.

“The NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet seemed pretty solid and each lap we turned was beneficial for us,” Elliott said. “However, in final practice today I knew something wasn’t right after my first lap. Something felt off.

“I think the rear end gear locked up on our Camaro.  It may have been a fluid issue, because I don’t believe I missed any shifts.  We’ll get this sorted out and go after it tomorrow in qualifying.  We need a strong qualifying run to set us up for the race.”

Qualifying for the Zippo 200 will take place on Saturday at 11:15 a.m ET while the 82-lap race will take place at 3:00 p.m and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network.
