Mason Mitchell to Make K&N East Debut at Bowman Grayby Kyle Pokrefky May 28, 2015 0 comments
MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Defending ARCA Racing Series champion Mason Mitchell is scheduled to make his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East debut Saturday in the NASCAR Hall of Fame 150 at Bowman Gray Stadium.
Mitchell, 20, will make his series debut with Hattori Racing Enterprises in a No. 1 Toyoda Gosei Toyota.
Jumping at an opportunity that just recently popped up for the West Des Moines, Iowa native, Mitchell was able to gain valuable experience in a K&N car in a Wednesday test that allowed him to become acclimated to the car.
“Our test was successful on Wednesday,” Mitchell said. “We made big gains all day and continued to improve our car. The biggest challenge was learning the grip level in these tires compared to an ARCA car.
“I can’t thank everyone at HRE and [Shigeaki] Hattori enough for allowing me to make my NASCAR K&N Pro Series East debut this weekend.”
Prior to inking his one-race deal with Hattori, Mitchell was originally scheduled to only compete in a part-time schedule in ARCA for his self-owned team, Mason Mitchell Motorsports, at events at Iowa Speedway and Pocono Raceway.
Mitchell will have plenty of short track experience to rely on from his time in ARCA on Saturday as he has nine top-fives and 17 top-10s in 22 career short track starts in the Toledo, Ohio-based series.
As for what he will have to do to ensure that he will be successful on Saturday, Mitchell is seeking to make a strong qualifying effort to set himself up for a great 150-lap race.
“Qualifying is going to be a key component for the race. A winner has never started outside the top-ten so we need to start up front. I really enjoyed the track during the test and am looking forward to a successful race Saturday.”
