NEWTON, Iowa — Viva Motorsports co-owner Jamie Dick is making his return to XFINITY Series action in Sunday’s 3M 250 at Iowa Speedway.
Diagnosed with onset diabetes after completing the Axalta Faster. Tougher. Brighter 200 at Phoenix International Raceway, Dick was forced to sit on the sidelines until receiving clearance from his physicians and NASCAR to return to competition.
Already scheduled to compete in a partial schedule behind the wheel of his team’s No. 55 Chevrolet, Dick enlisted the help of Jeffrey Earnhardt and Brandon Gdovic (both already contracted to drive for Viva) to fill in in his absence.
Dick, Earnhardt and Gdovic will continue to share driving duties of the car throughout the 2015 season.
“I couldn’t be happier to get back in the car this weekend,” Dick, 26, said. “I have been looking forward to this weekend since the day after Phoenix. There were a lot of unanswered questions when I was first diagnosed, but my focus quickly shifted to getting cleared to race.”
With the help of NASCAR’s medical staff and his personal doctors, the El Paso, Texas, native has been able to educate himself on his diagnosis and has taken the steps necessary to get himself fit and in a race-ready condition.
“With any new diagnosis, there is a lot to learn, but my doctors are doing a great job and the NASCAR staff has been great with showing me the path to getting healthy and back to driving,” Dick stated. “Both Jeffrey and Brandon did a great job in running the races I had originally planned and our Viva Motorsports team is on a roll. Now it’s my turn to keep that going.”
Dick enters Sunday’s 3M 250 35th in the drivers standings while the No. 55 Chevrolet currently sits 25th in the owners standings and is coming off of a 12th-place finish with Earnhardt at Talladega Superspeedway.
