AVONDALE, Ariz. – The Team Penske Ford Fusions topped the speed chart in opening practice at Phoenix International Raceway on Friday afternoon.

Joey Logano set the fastest lap with a lap time of 25.942 seconds at 138.771 mph, and his Team Penske teammate, Brad Keselowski clocked the second fastest lap. Kasey Kahne, who’s making his 400th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start this weekend, was third on the speed chart. Kevin Harvick, last weekend’s winner at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was fourth. Denny Hamlin rounded out the top-five.

Kurt Busch who’s making a return to NASCAR competition was on top of the speed chart for a while, but he ended the session in 17th.

“It was good just to get back in the seat and shake hands with all the guys,” Busch said. “Having the support of Stewart-Haas it’s been, like family. Then to see the other crew members that I know and some that I don’t know who shake my hand and say ‘welcome back’. It feels good. For me to just get some laps in today, in race trim the car seems fast. Q-trim, it’s a different game this year. That is why we are p.17. I have to learn the car and the feel, because it looks like the lap times are so tight. You mess up just a little bit that Haas Automation Chevy is p.17.”

Kasey Kahne had the best 10 consecutive lap average with an average speed of 132.955 mph. Kyle Larson was second with an average speed of 132.794 mph, followed by Brian Vickers with an average speed of 132.662 mph.
