AVONDALE, Ariz. — Hendrick Motorsports’s Kasey Kahne will attempt to make his 400th career start in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in Sunday’s CampingWorld.com 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.
Entering his 22nd Sprint Cup race weekend at Phoenix, the 2004 series rookie of the year returns to a track he claimed victory at in November of 2011 with Red Bull Racing searching for his ticket into this year’s iteration of the Chase.
Kahne enters this weekend’s CampingWorld.com 500 with 17 race victories, 83 top-fives, 147 top-10s, and 26 pole positions along with a best points finish of fourth in 2012 under his belt.
For the native of Emunclaw, Washington, the ‘400’ numeral crept up at a quick rate.
“I was pretty surprised that I’m already at 400 starts, it went by really quick,” Kahne said. “That’s a lot of starts. Hopefully we can run well at Phoenix and have a good showing in [my] 400th. I remember the 300th I’m pretty sure was Indianapolis. I don’t know, I’ve been in this sport for awhile.
“Phoenix has been a pretty good track for me over the years, especially the new pavement – I feel like I might have been a little better since then. I enjoy racing out there so hopefully we’ll have another good run and be up front on my 400th start.”
In 21 previous starts at the one-mile course in the suburban Phoenix area, Kahne, the current sixth-place driver in the points standings, has an average finish of 18.0 and has three top-fives and six top-10s outside of his 2011 win.
The No. 5 car will carry sponsorship from Farmers Insurance for Sunday’s race, the fourth of the 2015 Sprint Cup season.
