LAS VEGAS — As was the case this morning, Jimmie Johnson found himself on the top of the speed chart in final practice for Sunday’s Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The driver of the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet paced the field with a lap of 28.779 seconds around Sin City’s mile-and-a-half oval, turning in a lap that was 111 thousandths of a second quicker than second-place Joey Logano’s fastest lap.

Rounding out the top-10 of the session’s standings were Casey Mears, Martin Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick, Brian Vickers, Matt Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Brad Keselowski, and Austin Dillon.

Of the drivers to make a run across 10 consecutive laps, Kyle Larson was the fastest driver over a 10-lap average with an average speed of 184.215 miles per hour.

Two notable incidents occurred late in the final 55-minute practice session of the weekend.

Jeff Gordon, the polesitter for the Kobalt 400, will not start from P1 tomorrow afternoon as he will go to a backup car after taking on damage from a spin by Danica Patrick.

In the closing minute-and-a-half of the session, David Ragan got loose in Turn 2 and hit the right rear of his No. 18 Crispy M&Ms Toyota. Ragan will also go to a backup car for tomorrow’s race.
