BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — In his second career start in a NASCAR K&N Pro Series race and in his first in the West division, Dalton Sargeant claimed victory in the NAPA Auto Parts 150 at Kern County Raceway Park.
Sargeant prevailed in a see-saw battle between himself and series veteran David Mayhew to grab the win in the K&N Pro Series West’s season opener late Saturday night, finishing ahead of Mayhew, Noah Gragson, James Bickford and Chris Eggleston.
With his win in last night’s (scheduled) 75-mile event, the 17-year-old out of Boca Raton, Fla. secured his first-ever NASCAR win.
“It feels so great being able to come out here in my second K&N Pro Series start to be able to come home with the win – we had the pole as well,” Sargeant said. “It couldn’t feel any better than what it does right now.”
The driver of the No. 55 GALT Ford for owner Jeff Jefferson (Sargeant races for HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks in the K&N East division) led 75 total laps in the race and successfully fended off a late charge from Mayhew on a three-lap sprint to the finish to claim the checkered flag.
To successfully beat Mayhew at a track that the driver of the No. 17 MMI Services Chevrolet has proven to be strong at in the past made the Kern County win that much more special for Sargeant.
“It was absolutely crazy, never wracking for sure,” Sargeant said of the finish. “He’s [Mayhew] been around this place a hundred times and he’s definitely one of the best guys to beat here and we were able to hold him off. That’s just a great feeling.”
Seven caution flags flew during last night’s 160-lap race with the longest green flag stretch of the night lasting for 37 laps between Laps 11 and 47.
Sargeant and Mayhew proved to be the class of the field in the race as both were the only two drivers to spend time in the lead of the race.
Next up on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West calendar will be the King Taco Catering/NAPA Auto Parts 150 at Irwindale Speedway on April 11th. Sargeant’s next K&N start will come in the East division on April 4th at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.
