MARTINSVILLE, Va. — The game of musical chairs in the Sprint Cup Series will continue into Martinsville as Chris Buescher will race the No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford and Brett Moffitt will race the No. 55 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota in Sunday’s STP 500.
When initially published on Monday morning, the entry list for Sunday’s race showed Moffitt entered in the No. 34 car while Brian Vickers, regular driver of the No. 55 car, was listed for entry in his car. Hours later, the entry list was updated to show Moffitt in the No. 55 and now Buescher in the No. 34.
Vickers, who was sidelined prior to the Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway after blood clots were discovered in his chest, had Moffitt drive the No. 55 Toyota in his place while Buescher, making his Sprint Cup debut, filled in for Moffitt in the No. 34 Ford this past Sunday.
In their respective efforts at Auto Club, Buescher brought home the No. 34 in the 20th position while Moffitt wheeled the No. 55 to a 22nd-place finish.
Moffitt has previous experience filling in for Vickers as he raced the No. 55 car in this year’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway and turned in an eighth-place result while Vickers recovered from open heart surgery.
With Vickers expected to miss three months of action, The Fourth Turn has learned through a Michael Waltrip Racing representative that the team has not yet determined if Moffitt will race the team’s No. 55 in the races that Vickers will miss.
The Fourth Turn has yet to learn if Buescher will race in the No. 34 in events scheduled beyond Martinsville. The full-time driver for Roush Fenway Racing in the XFINITY Series raced at Auto Club on a one-race deal.
