TALLADEGA, Ala. — The lone two-hour practice session for Saturday’s Fred’s 250 at Talladega Superspeedway wrapped up earlier this afternoon with Ben Kennedy standing tall atop the speed chart.

Kennedy led a string of six other Chevrolet drivers with a lap of 50.693 seconds in his Turner Scott Motorsports-owned No. 31 Heater.com Chevrolet.

Positions two-through-six on the scoring pylon were filled by Mason Mingus, Tayler Malsam, Ryan Sieg, Spencer Gallagher, Ron Hornaday Jr., and Brennan Newberry. The gap from Kennedy to Mingus was eight thousandths of a second and the gap from Kennedy to Newberry was 37 thousandths of a second.

Positions eight-through-10 would be occupied by three Toyota drivers – Chris Fontaine, Erik Jones, and Joe Nemechek. The three Tundra drivers’ draft would be unable to get near the fast pack of Chevrolets’ time as they would run over a half-second slower than the leading Silverados.

The draft was in full effect throughout opening practice as drivers would run in a line and bump draft each other down the massive straightaways of the 2.66-mile superspeedway. The 36-truck field would also practice in the massive packs that we have become accustomed to seeing at the restrictor plate tracks, running three-to-four wide at times in the session.

Two incidents would occur during this morning/afternoon’s session.

Mike Harmon would go for a spin in his self-owned No. 74 Chevrolet early on in the session while Milka Duno would lose an engine roughly halfway through practice.

Qualifying remains for the Camping World Truck Series field today with time trials scheduled for 5:45 p.m EST (4:45 p.m CST) with television coverage on FOX Sports 1.

NASCAR’s new restrictor plate qualifying format will make its debut later today with two groups split by a random draw going out in Q1. Each group in Q1 will run for five minutes – the same amount of time allocated to all 24 drivers to advance to Q2 and for the 12 drivers to advance to Q3.
