LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In the first of two rounds this weekend at the Port of Los Angeles, Scott Speed took control early on to capture the win in Round 7 of the Red Bull Global Rallycross schedule.

On the start of Heat A, Nelson Piquet Jr. who entered the weekend as the point leader went hard into the inside wall, forcing his team to make quick repairs before the LCQ. Scott Speed took the Joker on lap three and was able to take the lead away from Sverre Isachsen. Speed won the heat, followed by Isachsen and Travis Pastrana.

Ken Block took the checkered flag in Heat B after forcing his way underneath Joni Wiman on lap two. Rhys Millen finished second, and Wiman rounded out the top-three.

The LCQ was filled with intense action. On the start of the race, Bucky Lasek got turned around, bringing out the red flag. Once back to green, Emma Gilmour spun, but no red flag came out. As the laps quickly dissipated, the battle for the transfer spot heated up. In the end, Austin Dyne earned the fourth transfer spot, meaning that point leader, Nelson Piquet Jr. missed out and didn’t qualify for the main event. Tanner Foust won the LCQ with Patrik Sandell finishing second and Steve Aprin crossing the line in third.

Scott Speed led all of the laps in the main event to capture his third win of the 2014 season. He got the advantage on the start of the race and never looked back. Austin Dyne retired from the event on lap five after having issues with the right front wheel assembly. While running in the fourth position with only one lap to go, Tanner Foust went up in smoke. Speed took the victory, but Joni Wiman barely trailed while finishing second. Ken Block rounded out the top-three.

With the third place finish, Ken Block takes over the point lead. He’s tied with Nelson Piquet Jr. point wise but has more victories, therefore giving him the lead. Scott Speed is now only two points back from the lead after capturing today’s victory.

The second race of the doubleheader at the Port of Los Angeles will be aired on NBC Sunday at 5 p.m. EST.
