NASCAR Reveals 2015 Sprint Cup Rules Package

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Some major changes are coming to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series next year as evidenced in NASCAR’s reveal of the 2015 rules package for its premier division.

Changes to the cars, testing schedules, officiating, and to qualifying procedures are on hand for the 2015 season.

The changes made to the rules package for the Sprint Cup Series were to achieve the following goals – produce the best on-track product possible for spectators, cut costs for the teams, improve safety, enhance product relevance, and to improve on the sport’s environmental efforts.

NASCAR’s Senior Vice President of Innovation and Racing, Gene Stefanyshan, believes that the sanctioning body’s modifications to the race package for next year should provide for great racing for followers of the sport.

“This race package represents a lot of hard work by NASCAR, the race teams, the drivers, our manufacturer partners, and Goodyear,” Stefanyshan said in a statement. “We’ve remained committed to constantly looking at our racing, and the work that has been done has been aimed at getting a rules package delivered to the race teams as early as possible.

“We have had fantastic racing so far in 2014. We remain committed to constantly looking to improve it. Our fans deserve it and our industry is pushing for it. That will not stop with the 2015 package; the development will continue over many years to come.”

The modifications that the Sprint Cup Series cars will receive next year are as follows…

  • Reduction of horsepower to 725 from 850 with the introduction of a tapered spacer – similar to the ones used by the ARCA Racing Series and Nationwide Series.
  • Roller valve lifters to replace flat valve lifter.
  • Lower rear differential gear ratios that will target 9,000 RPM.
  • Rear spoiler adjustment to six inches in height – this year’s spoiler height is at eight inches.
  • Optional driver adjustable track bar – similar to ones found in IndyCar.
  • 38-inch wide radiator pan.
  • Minimum vehicle weight decrease by 50 pounds to 3,250 pounds.
  • Introduction of rain tires to the field for road course races for practice, qualifying, and the two road course races themselves.

One of the greatest changes that NASCAR has made for next season is a restructuring of its track testing policies.

January’s traditional preseason test at Daytona has been completely eliminated from the schedule for next year. Private test sessions held by individual teams have also been prohibited by the sanctioning body, leaving teams to test at Goodyear’s tire tests and NASCAR-sanctioned tests only.

NASCAR’s knockout-qualifying format will also receive a bit of a revamp as well.

Reportedly, the length of each round for superspeedway, intermediate, and short tracks will be shortened – road course races will feature the same length for their two rounds. The knockout format will also make its Daytona 500 debut next year with the opening race of the season scheduled to use the format.

NASCAR’s Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer, Steve O’Donnell, is pleased with the progress that the sport’s research and development team made with the 2015 race package and is confident that it will provide for great racing next year.

“We’re very pleased with the rules package and what it will do for our racing,” said O’Donnell. “We’re confident it will continue to generate great racing, along with continuous safety improvements.

“The work alongside our industry has been unprecedented.We’ve had great dialogue with our drivers and teams, our manufacturers, and Goodyear, allowing us to build great efficiencies into the 2015 rules package. We’ve met our goal of delivering rules to teams with time to prepare for next season and we’re seeing the benefits of an updated process for developing our rules paying dividends. It will only continue to improve.”
