JOLIET, Ill. — With a lap of 31.374 seconds, John Wes Townley (Venturini Motorsports) earned the pole position for tonight’s Ansell ActivArmr 150 at the Chicagoland Speedway.

Townley claimed his second career pole position in the ARCA Racing Series and his first pole of the 2014 season. The driver of the No. 15 Zaxby’s Toyota would fend off Spencer Gallagher (GMS Racing), Will Kimmel (Kimmel Racing), and teammates Justin Boston and Cody Coughlin to win his first pole since last year’s Lucas Oil 200 at Daytona. Townley would run a blisteringly quick lap that was a tenth-and-a-half quicker than the lap that Gallagher ran.

Townley, the current fourth-place driver in the ARCA Racing Series’ drivers’ standings will have a clear advantage over the top-three in the standings – Grant Enfinger (Team BCR), Mason Mitchell (Mason Mitchell Motorsports), and Frank Kimmel (Win-Tron Racing) at the drop of the green flag. Enfinger qualified seventh for tonight’s race while Mitchell and Kimmel would qualify in the respective ninth and 10th positions.

Friday’s practice session leader, Cody Coughlin (Venturini Motorsports), would run the fifth-quickest lap of the qualifying session with a lap of 31.648 seconds.

The session would have one incident as Austin Wayne Self (Cunningham Motorsports) would back his No. 22 AM Technical Solutions into the Turn 2 wall after crossing the start/finish line for his first flying lap. Self and the No. 22 team immediately declared that they will go to a backup car for tonight’s race.

In the 13 races that the ARCA Racing Series have held at the Chicagoland Speedway, the pole-sitter went on to win the race six times – most recently with Kevin Swindell in 2012. The top-five has been the place to start if you’re going to win at Chicagoland as the last nine runnings of the Ansell ActivArmr 150 have been won from a top-five starting position.
