NEWTON, Iowa. — As most of the NASCAR world had their eyes on Charlotte during Friday, the NASCAR Nationwide Series kicked off their weekend in Iowa with three practice sessions.

Chase Elliott (JR Motorsports) led both the first and third sessions of the day, posting the quickest lap of the entire day in the third session when he ran a lap of 23.236 seconds. The current series points leader turned in a second-place performance at the similarly-built Richmond International Raceway and his pace from three weeks ago has seemingly carried over to the Iowa Speedway.

The driver who came closest to besting Elliott’s laps during Friday’s practices was Brian Scott (Richard Childress Racing.) Scott would post the quickest time of the second practice with a lap of 23.366 seconds and would run the second and tenth-quickest laps, respectively, in the first and third practices for the event. Scott also turned in a top-five run at Richmond, finishing fifth.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s trio of drivers for this weekend, Elliott Sadler, Sam Hornish Jr., and Michael McDowell, were consistent across all three practices and placed themselves into the top-10 in each of the day’s practices. Hornish Jr. posted the team’s fastest lap in the first session when he ran a 23.419 second lap, a lap that was good enough for third in the opening session. McDowell is making his first Nationwide Series start of the season and has shown that he is already up-to-speed in his No. 20 Pizza Ranch Camry after posting his quickest lap of the day with a 23.494 second lap during the day’s second session.

Turner Scott Motorsports shuffled their drivers around for this weekend’s race as Dylan Kwasniewski moved to the No. 42 car with Chase Pistone driving the No. 31 car for the weekend. The 30-year-old Pistone is making his first Nationwide Series start since 2006 and immediately shook off any rust he may have gained during the eight-year period since his last start, going to eighth on the speedchart in the first practice. Pistone would back up his early pace by landing in the top-10 of both the second and third practice sessions as well, running the sixth-fastest time in both sessions.

Trevor Bayne (Roush-Fenway Racing) returns to a track that he won at last year with a No. 6 Advocare Mustang with some speed to it. Bayne was able to post a top-10 speed in each practice session with his fastest lap coming in the first session when he ran a lap of 23.458 seconds.

Notably absent from each session was Team Penske’s No. 22 Mustang. Ryan Blaney was tabbed to drive the No. 22 car for this weekend but was in Charlotte for the entire day driving for Brad Keselowski Racing in the Camping World Truck Series.

Saturday will bring the final practice session for the Get To Know Newton 250 as well as qualifying set to take place in the evening.
