DARLINGTON, S.C. — Rookie Chris Buescher ought to be feeling quite happy heading into Friday’s VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway; if his practice speeds are anything to go off, he has the fastest car for the event.

Buescher in his No. 60 Roush-Fenway Racing Mustang set the quickest lap of both of Thursday’s practices, running a lap of 28.865 seconds in the second practice. Buescher was able to build off the pace that he showed in the first practice where he turned in a lap of 29.207 seconds, fast enough to be fourth-quickest in the weekend’s opening session.

A Ford Mustang not only paced the second practice session but the first session as well; Joey Logano completed a lap of 29.033 seconds to put himself at the top of the chart for Thursday’s opening mid-day practice in Darlington. Logano lost a little bit in the second session, turning in a best lap that was two-tenths off of his first practice pace – 29.267 seconds.

If Kyle Busch is looking to defend his win at Darlington from last year, it appears that he has a car capable of providing him the opportunity to do so and earn his third victory of the season. Busch registered the second-quickest time in both sessions, turning in nearly identical times in both – a 29.150 second lap in the first session and a 29.140 second lap in the second.

Points leader Chase Elliott started off his first-ever race weekend as a driver at Darlington Raceway a bit shaky, turning in the 13th-fastest practice time in the first session. Elliott and crew chief Greg Ives would improve on the car’s setup and would move up to fifth on the speedchart in Thursday’s final session.

A story of note is Sprint Cup driver and non-entrant for the race, Aric Almirola, hopping into the Richard Petty Motorsports’ No. 43 Mustang to turn in some practice laps in the first session. The move was likely to provide rookie Dakoda Armstrong with some pointers on how to best drive a car around Darlington and to provide an opportunity for Armstrong to compare notes with a more experienced driver.
